When riffling through some photos taken a few years ago I came across this picture of our member Vern Schuppan showing that he can still mix it with the younger guys even in rally events.
This occasion was the 2004 running of Classic Adelaide. It was a tradition on the event for Mercedes Benz not only to send over some of their rare sports cars to run in the event but also to showcase their latest models that were usually given to the late Sir Jack Brabham and Vern Schuppan. On this occasion the event included a special stage run on the beautiful parkland setting in Adelaide that had hosted the early World Championship Australian Grand Prix races.
By the time Vern came into grand prix racing the Australian event had moved from Adelaide to Melbourne ; indeed Vern never competed in any Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in his career. (Though he did compete in one Australian Grand Prix when it was for Formula 5000 cars).
The photo shows him in action on the original Adelaide circuit in 2004 on Classic Adelaide driving the latest Mercedes SLK sports car.
